"This church cannot claim a long history but it has a distinctive character and romantic beginning, being a pure gift from two residents in this village, viz: sisters Alice Makant and Margaret Haddock, who gave their large fortune to build it, supervising the work from their home at the Westhoughton Corn Mill, situated in Mill Lane."
So began an article in the Daisy Hill Parish Church Year Book of 1966, and it introduces the name of one of the three families which are inseparable from the history of Daisy Hill and Westhoughton. John Seddon built St. Bartholomew’s Church and also the Green Vale Print Works (now Bellhouse). He had puzzled local residents by telling them he would take gold out of the stream running through Hall Lee Bank Park: he did, of course, by damming the stream to make the lodge for his calico works. The Welch family were owners of the Green Vale and were most generous to the church and the village. The name of Haddock was linked with Daisy Hill well before the building of the Church at their expense and their generosity continued for many years afterwards, both to Daisy Hill and to Westhoughton.
